The forest restoration of the CMVMC of Bermés (Lalín) contributes to offsetting the carbon footprint of Inasus
The Lalín-based company Inasus, an internationally renowned firm in the design, engineering and assembly of façades, is promoting the voluntary offsetting of its carbon footprint through a forest restoration project. Specifically, Inasus has acquired a portion of the tonnes of CO2 equivalent being captured from the atmosphere by an environmental restoration project promoted by the Bermés Community of Mountaineers, in the Carrio mountain (Lalín).
The Bermés Community of Neighbourhood Woodlands began afforesting an area that had been denuded since at least 1989 in 2014, which subsequently allowed the project to be registered with the Ministry of Ecological Transition's CO2 Absorption Register.
Environmental restoration began with the planting of a 20.7-hectare stand of native pine (Pine maritime), to which in recent years 7.4 hectares of chestnut and 2.4 hectares of other deciduous broadleaves (oaks and birches) have been added. The community of montes is committed to keeping that woodland standing for a minimum of 40 years, during which it will capture around 7,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent from the atmosphere.
Around 1,300 tonnes of CO2 equivalent that were scheduled to be captured have already been made available for sale, which enabled the signing of a collaboration agreement between Inasus and the community of montes.
Carbon neutrality at Inasus in 2025
The company Inasus is voluntarily undertaking a plan to reduce and offset its carbon footprint, with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2025. To offset its carbon footprint, Inasus was interested in supporting environmental projects in the Deza region, which led to a three-year (2022–2025) collaboration with the Bermés Community of Neighbourhood Woodland Owners (Lalín).
The funds that Inasus will provide to the Bermés Community of Mountaineers will enable the support of maintenance work on the forest stands, where replanting and clear-felling operations have already been carried out. In the coming years, pruning and thinning are also planned, in accordance with the forest plan for the community woodland approved by the authorities.
In this way, progress is made towards the goal of allowing these forest stands to reach maturity, thereby contributing to the environmental restoration of a degraded area.
Collaboration of the Galician Forestry Association
The restoration project promoted by the Bermés Community of Neighbourhood Woodlands received technical support and coordination from the Galician Forestry Association (AFG).
The initiative is included in the Galicia Rexenera programme, promoted by the AFG. The aim of Galicia Rexenera is to secure funding from companies interested in voluntarily offsetting their CO2 footprint. These funds are intended to accelerate the recovery of forests affected by wildfires in recent years, as well as to promote the reforestation of areas that have been bare since before 1990.
