Health recommendations in the event of a wildfire
The Ministry of Health recently published a guide with health recommendations for dealing with wildfires. In it, it briefly and clearly outlines the guidelines to follow if you find yourself near a wildfire.
Among the multiple recommendations, we highlight:
- Keep calm, avoiding situations of fear and panic.
- Stay indoors if it is safe and avoid opening windows or ventilating directly with outside air. If possible, remain in the best-protected rooms or those furthest from sources of smoke, and in cooler environments.
- Reduce unnecessary journeys. If travelling is essential, use the vehicle's lights during the day.
- Use FFP2/N95-type masks when indicated. In the event of smoke exposure, surgical masks and cloths are not reliable protection against its particles.
- Avoid remaining in open areas or approaching the fire area.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
- Pay special attention to the needs of older people, children, pregnant women and individuals with chronic health conditions.
- Stay informed at all times through official sources and follow the recommendations of the authorities.
