The AFG is a non-profit private entity that brings together individual private forest owners and private communal neighborhood forest owners in Galicia. It is governed by its articles of association as amended on May 26, 2018.

The AFG is not a public administration, nor is it part of the public sector and, consequently, does not hold the status of awarding authority, although it intends that the contracts included in the scope of transnational and interregional European territorial cooperation programs must conform to the principles of publicity , competition, transparency, confidentiality, equality and non-discrimination.
