PLANFORLAB.- Kick-off meeting of the operational group in Lourizán
The supra-autonomous Operational Group PLANFORLAB will organize the next Thursday, February 6, at 10:15 a.m., a presentation day to publicize the innovation project: “Network of laboratory forests with improved plants to increase resilience and production in coniferous forests” and present its objectives, ongoing activities and progress. This Operational Group is a joint effort of several leading entities, which aim to contribute to an improvement in the situation of coniferous forests through the practical application of advances in the development of genetic material and adaptive forestry, using the innovative concept of laboratory forest as a means.
The innovations derived from the project will help coniferous forests to grow in better conditions against the pests and diseases that currently cause the most damage and against climate change, and will also improve the economic situation of timber producers. It also aims to improve the quality of the wood, favouring the economic sustainability of the plantations. The project is oriented towards the development and use of new improved plants of the species Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata and Pinus sylvestris. For this purpose, innovative forest reproductive material will be reproduced or amplified, as the case may be, by means of different reproduction procedures (sexual and vegetative) with the aim of obtaining plants of high genetic quality, which will be installed in test plots within the laboratory forests.
The results of PLANFORLAB will allow us to evaluate the resistance, tolerance and suitability of new forest reproductive materials selected through genetic improvement to the real cultivation conditions in commercial nurseries and forest plantations in environments affected by pathologies such as pine nematode, Fusarium and the red and brown bands. For its part, the application of this material using adaptive silvicultural models will allow evaluating its response to climate changes and, therefore, anticipating stress situations in coniferous forests.
Within the framework of the dissemination activities of the PLANFORLAB project, this presentation day of the Operational Group is organised, in which some of the entities participating in the supra-autonomic Operational Group will comment on the role they are playing in the project, as well as the positive impact it will have on the forestry sector. Thus, the day will include reports from the Galicia Forestry Association (AFG), Centro de Investigación Forestal LOURIZÁN, Empresa de Transformación Agraria S.A., S.M.E., M.P. (TRAGSA) and Fundación Empresa Universidad Gallega (FEUGA). However, the PLANFORLAB Operational Group is not limited to these entities, as the following members also form part of the consortium: Federación de Asociaciones Forestales de Castilla y León (FAFCYLE), Confederación de Forestalistas del País Vasco (CFPV), Confederación de Organizaciones de Selvicultores de España (COSE), Centro tecnológico NEIKER, Fundación Universidad de Valladolid (UVa) and Instituto de Ciencias Forestales del INIA-CSIC.
