The scientific-technical meeting of pinaster pine promotes the confluence of scientific research with the operational management of the forest
The Galicia Forestry Association developed for two days a cross-border scientific-technical meeting on the forests of Pinus pinaster, popularly known as as piñeiro do país or piñeiro bravo. The meeting promoted the confluence of scientific research and forest management in Galicia and Northern Portugal, as the event featured researchers, forest owners, forest service companies and wood processing sawmills.
The aim of the event was to draw the road map for Pinus pinaster in the coming years in Galicia and Northern Portugal, in the face of challenges such as climate change and the advance of pests and diseases.
The conclusions of the event point to the need to continue efforts in genetic improvement, together with a forestry aimed at obtaining wood of higher quality and that is more profitable for the owners.
In the debate at the meeting, questions such as the silvicultural models to be applied in the forest or the advantages of the introduction of improved plants in the new plantations were reflected upon.
Visits to the forest
As part of this meeting, forest visits were made to a trial plot of Pinus pinaster located in the private communal neighborhood forest of Soutelo (Salceda de Caselas), installed in 2021 jointly by the Lourizán Forestry Research Centre and the Galicia Forestry Association. This is a plot in which a total of 12 genotypes resistant to the pine nematode are being tested.
Another of the technical visits was to the demonstration plot of Mouriscados (Mondariz), promoted by the Galicia Forestry Association in collaboration with the private communal neighbourhood forest owners of Mouriscados (Mondariz). In the demonstration plot of Mouriscados, planting works were visited with an improved plant, from cuttings, as well as an experimental planting of 2.7 hectares of plant resistant to the pine nematode.
The tour of the private communal neighbourhood forest of Mouriscados ended in an area where, after a recent fire, old terraces were restored. It is a work that was done with controlled material from Pinus pinaster, accompanied by natural regeneration, and birch belts in certain areas.
This meeting featured patronage of the Regional Ministry of Rural Environment of the Xunta de Galicia, with the collaboration of the Arume Foundation and Abanca.
Its organizing committee was made up of representatives from the following institutions: Galicia Forestry Association (Francisco Dans), Galician Forestry Sectoral Association (Jacobo Feijoo), Portuguese Forestry Association (Rosário Alves), Lourizán Forest Research Centre (Raquel Díaz), Directorate General of Planning and Forest Management of the Ministry of Rural Environment (José Martel), Arume Foundation (Xosé Mera) and Union of Foresters of Southern Europe (Leire Salaberria).
The organization and technical secretariat The meeting was organized by the Galicia Forestry Association (Carme Boente and Julio Ruiz) with the support of the Union of Foresters of Southern Europe (Edurne Lacalle).
