Cut from the test wood of the ForestED project in the Galician forests
Throughout the month of November 2024, the Galicia Forestry Association carried out the felling planned within the activities of the ForestED project of oak and chestnut samples in the study areas of the project. On November 5, a chestnut plot was cut in the municipality of Boqueixón, on the 6th and 7th, oaks were felled in Incio and on the 11th and 15th, and birch was cut in Zas.
The extracted wood was transferred to the facilities of the Instituto de Arquitectura Avanzada de Cataluña in Valldaura to be processed and generate the test pieces and samples that the Centro de Ciencia y Tecnología Forestal de Cataluña will later analyze for the transformation of the wood extracted from the study areas into prototypes of structural components for buildings.
One of the main objectives of the ForestED project is to obtain new wood products from deciduous trees such as chestnut, birch or oak. The initiative aims to generate new products for building, both structural and non-structural (interior and exterior carpentry, etc.), as well as materials for street furniture.
This project is an initiative led by the Instituto de Arquitectura Avanzada de Cataluña, with the participation of the Consorci Forestal de Catalunya, the Centro de Ciencia y Tecnología Forestal de Cataluña and the Galician Forestry Association.
ForestED has the support of the Fundación Biodiversidad of the Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
