The Forestry Association of Galicia is organising a broadleaf tree planting workshop at the Pico Sacro demonstration woodland.
The Forestry Association of Galicia (AFG) has scheduled a workshop for this Friday on planting broadleaf deciduous trees at the Demonstration Mount of Pico Sacro, which was launched this year as a silviculture school for forest owners and community woodlands. Friday's workshop will consist of planting cherry trees, with an explanation of the species' management regarding issues such as fertilisation and post-planting care.
The activity is aimed at promoting the production of high-value timber from species such as cherry, a deciduous broadleaf tree that can also be used in the fire protection belts that must be established around population centres.
The broadleaf planting workshop thus continues the line of work that the Pico Sacro Demonstration Woodland has been developing since this summer, with practical demonstrations of chestnut and walnut pruning, as well as a workshop on pruning and thinning of American oak. The last of the training activities carried out this autumn was a demonstration of mechanised chestnut harvesting.
Course enrolment
The demonstration, which is free to attend, will be led by the director of the AFG, Francisco Dans del Valle, and will take place on Friday 14 December at 4.15 pm at the demonstration plot on Pico Sacro, located here.
Anyone interested in attending must contact the AFG office in Santiago in advance (telephone: 981 564 011 and 618 752 214; email: afg@asociacionforestal.org).
Demonstration Mount of Pico Sacro
The Pico Sacro Demonstration Forest project, promoted with the collaboration of the Inditex group, covers 18 hectares of woodland and agricultural land in Boqueixón. The initiative aims to combine the production of broadleaf timber with the harvesting of mushrooms and forest fruits, as well as with arable crops.
